On the Size of PLA's Required to Realize Binary and Multiple-Valued Functions

چکیده
Abstmct-While the use of programmable logic arrays in modern logic design is common, little is known about what PLA size provides reasonable coverage in typical applications. We address this question by showing upper and lower bounds on the average number of product terms required in the minimal realization of binary and multiple-valued functions as a function of the number of nonzero output values. When the number of such values is small, the bounds are nearly the same, and accurate values for the average are obtained. In addition, an upper bound is derived for the variance of the distribution of the number of product terms required in minimal realizations of binary functions. When the number of nonzero values is small, we find that the variance is small, and it follows that most functions require nearly the average number of product terms. The variance, in addition to the upper and lower bounds, allow conclusions to be made about how PLA size determines the set of realizable functions. Although the bounds are most accurate when there are few nonzero values, they are adequate for analyzing commercially available PLA’s, which we do in this paper. Most such PLA’s are small enough that our results can be applied. For example, when the number of nonzero values exceeds some threshold uT, determined by the PLA size, only a small fraction of the functions can be realized. Our analysis shows that for all but one commercially available PLA, the number of nonzero values is a statistically meaningful criteria for determining whether or not a given function is likely to be realized.

On the Optimal Design of Multiple-Valued PLA's
This paper describes the design and analysis of three types of multiple-valued PLA’s: ‘lype 1 PLA’s realize functions directly in the form of the MAX of MIN of literal functions and constants. In Type 2 PLA’s, the body of the PLA is binary and the output is encoded as a multiple-valued logic value. ‘fype 3 PLA’s are the same as 5pe 2 PLA’s except 2-bit decoders and a permutation network is used...
متن کاملFuzzy number-valued fuzzy relation
It is well known fact that binary relations are generalized mathematical functions. Contrary to functions from domain to range, binary relations may assign to each element of domain two or more elements of range. Some basic operations on functions such as the inverse and composition are applicable to binary relations as well. Depending on the domain or range or both are fuzzy value fuzzy set, i...
متن کاملA Systematic Design Method for Two-Variable Numeric Function Generators Using Multiple-Valued Decision Diagrams
This paper proposes a high-speed architecture to realize two-variable numeric functions. It represents the given function as an edgevalued multiple-valued decision diagram (EVMDD), and shows a systematic design method based on the EVMDD. To achieve a design, we characterize a numeric function f by the values of l and p for which f is an l-restricted Mp-monotone increasing function. Here, l is a...

This paper presents a novel design of quaternary logic gates using graphene nanoribbon field effect transistors (GNRFETs). GNRFETs are the alternative devices for digital circuit design due to their superior carrier-transport properties and potential for large-scale processing. In addition, Multiple-valued logic (MVL) is a promising alternative to the conventional binary logic design. Sa...
